The story of this atrocity is told in The Outlaw Ocean, in which New York Times journalist Ian Urbina explores a parallel world, spanning two thirds of the Earth’s surface but almost entirely hidden from public scrutiny. The helpless men are picked off one by one, and the sea around them turns red. They are being circled by fishing boats, whose crews do nothing to help and then open fire. A video recorded on the phone showed four men flailing in the sea among wreckage of an overturned wooden boat.
